About the Forest Friendly 500 campaign

The Forest Friendly 500 is a group of large and small businesses in North America and around the world who have taken a pledge to not use Kimberly-Clark tissue products. Kimberly-Clark, the world’s largest manufacturer of tissue products, destroys ancient forests, the planet’s last remaining original forests, to make products that are used once and then thrown away or flushed down the toilet. Less than 19% of the pulp that Kimberly-Clark uses in North America comes from recycled sources and many of the company’s suppliers of virgin tree fiber, especially in Canada, continue to clearcut ancient forests, habitat for grizzly bears and woodland caribou, and essential in the fight against global climate change. The Forest Friendly 500 businesses believe that they have the responsibility to make sure that they are not financially supporting the destruction of ancient forests by purchasing toilet paper, paper towels, napkins, facial tissue and other products made by the world’s largest tissue product manufacturer. They have stood up proudly as responsible corporate citizens, joining with tens of thousands of individual consumers, in urging Kimberly-Clark to stop wiping away ancient forests.

The Forest Friendly 500 initiative comes at a time with growing concern amongst consumers about the products they purchase and the impacts these products have on the environment, workers and communities. In fact, according to the 2004 Cone Corporate Citizenship Study, a national report on consumers and corporations, ninety per cent of Americans would consider switching to a competitor’s products or services if they discovered a company was behaving illegally or unethically. Seventy-five per cent said they would boycott a company’s products or services. An IBM Business Consulting Services report found that many large buyers of forest products consider the environment to be an important criteria when making purchasing decisions.

The Forest Friendly 500 businesses urge Kimberly-Clark to:

1. End the purchase of pulp from clearcut endangered forests.
2. Use more recycled fiber, especially post-consumer recycled, in their tissue products
3. Use only virgin tree fiber that comes Forest Stewardship Council eco-certified forestry operations.

The Forest Friendly 500 project was initiated by Greenpeace in March 2006 and is another component of the Kleercut.net campaign.
